Walker Prison Release Paths
Walker State Prison is a Georgia Department of Corrections institution for adult men convicted of felonies. It is not operated by the Walker County Sheriff. A person leaving this prison may max out a sentence, enter parole, move under a conditional release, transfer to another state placement, or leave for another agency because of a detainer. Each path creates different records. GDC holds the offender and sentence record. The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles controls parole decisions. The Department of Community Supervision, or DCS, handles field supervision after many parole and felony-probation releases.
A state record may show released or discharged even though a county source has no recent entry. Conversely, a person can leave Walker State Prison through a transfer and remain confined. The physical exit alone does not prove the sentence or every hold ended. Use the status, facility, sentence fields, and receiving authority together.

GDC facility pages also list the department's main mailing address as 300 Patrol Road, Forsyth, GA 31029. State which office and record are needed rather than asking the county sheriff to confirm a GDC release.
Walker Prison Date Fields
Georgia state records use several dates that do not mean the same thing. Sentence Begin Date accounts for applicable jail credit and special court instructions. Sentence End Date reflects the sentence length, non-running time, and earned-time credits. Maximum Release Date is the date custody would end if the full term were served without parole. Tentative Parole Month, or TPM, is a planning month set by the Parole Board, not a guaranteed release date.

Misconduct, required programs, earned credits, parole action, and detainers can alter a projected path. The Parole Board says a TPM may be postponed or canceled. Actual release should therefore be verified after the event rather than inferred from an earlier planned date.
Walker Prison History and Scale
GDC lists Walker State Prison as built and opened in 1972, renovated in 2000, medium security, and able to house 444 people. The prison uses open dormitories and single cells and also houses a fire station. These facts distinguish it from the county detention facility in LaFayette.

Walker Prison Programs and Release
Walker State Prison has a Faith & Character Based mission for people who voluntarily request that setting. GDC lists Motivation for Change, Moral Reconation Therapy, Thinking for a Change, Matrix, Gateway, RSAT, counseling, education, career services, veterans services, family and fatherhood services, mentoring, vocational training, on-the-job training, and work details. Participation may form part of planning, but it does not by itself prove release eligibility or a date.
Program completion should be read beside the sentence record and any Parole Board requirement. Georgia's Performance Incentive Credit program can affect a TPM or Maximum Release Date for eligible people, but GDC excludes several categories and limits credits. No program listing promises a benefit to one named person. Confirm the resulting computation through the offender record and Inmate Records.
Walker Parole and Supervision
If parole is involved, the Parole Board's TPM lookup and parolee search answer different phases. TPM concerns a person still under consideration or awaiting final review. The parolee search concerns a person released to parole. DCS then provides local field supervision. Someone who reaches sentence discharge without parole may not appear as an active parolee, so GDC remains the stronger release source.
The DCS LaFayette field office serves Walker County and neighboring counties in the Lookout Mountain Circuit. Questions about reporting, an assigned office, or active field supervision belong with DCS. Questions about the Board's decision belong with the Parole Board. Questions about the prison release and sentence record belong with GDC.
VINE may provide a custody-change alert when an agency sends an event, but an alert is not the sentence record. It may omit the legal reason, destination, or court effect. Compare it with GDC. If a federal or immigration detainer caused the move, check the receiving federal source. The Walker sheriff cannot settle a state-prison or federal custody question.
